Last Morsel

In Bellows Falls there is an undercover eatery with a down-and-dirty name: Fat Franks. The name comes from the juicy, all-beef hot dogs you can find there. My family and I go to Fat Franks because owner Jim Mort purchases his beef, vegetables, and paper goods locally and regionally. And his eatery has ambiance, beautiful colors, and a great view of the Connecticut River.

We appreciate the 7-oz. burgers ground fresh daily from hormone-free, antibiotic-free, vegetarian-fed beef from a New England farm. And Jim’s veggie burger actually has vegetables in it. Our daughter loves the chili dog with stone-ground, French-style mustard from Rayes of Maine.

All sides are made in-house using the freshest ingredients, organic when possible. We often order the ample portion of twice-fried, hand-cut fries made with Russet potatoes. They’re crisp and emerge hot from 100% transfat-free canola oil. McDonald’s and the rest of the fast food gang may catch up with Fat Franks someday.

Cardboard, plastic, glass bottles, and cans are recycled, and the to-go containers and cleaning supplies are biodegradable. Jim offers a professional, caring apprenticeship to anyone who wants to work, and he treats everyone like an old-time customer, even if it’s someone’s first time there. The ancient art of customer service practiced at Fat Franks is the daily special to us.
